SER 2023 is convening the global restoration community in person for the first time since the 8th World Conference held in Cape Town, South Africa, in 2019. This year, the event is happening in Darwin, Australia.
Taking place during the Day 3 Plenary, Mateo’s session will centre on accountability and transparency in ecosystem restoration. He will delve into how these essential elements not only enhance the overall effectiveness of ecosystem restoration initiatives but also play a pivotal role for key aspects of the project that may be at the centre of their success..
The session will focus on mechanisms that underpin the success of ecosystem restoration efforts, offering attendees a deeper understanding of their significance in the broader context of environmental restoration.
Preferred by Nature's commitment to the UN Decade on Restoration
As part of Preferred by Nature's commitment to achieving the UN Decade on Restoration goals, we have published the Ecosystem Restoration Standard for monitoring and reporting. The comprehensive Standard provides a framework for addressing both environmental and social aspects, evaluating project restoration performance, and connecting with funders seeking Nature Based Solutions.
The Standard includes a dedicated Climate Module, serving as a starting point for projects to connect with other carbon initiatives. Preferred by Nature has collaborated with the World Resources Institute Initiative 20x20 Monitoring Group and has played a pivotal role in developing the Forest Stewardship CouncilTM (FSCTM) Procedure for Ecosystem Services, reflecting our dedication to supporting a collaborative UN Decade where all efforts contribute to its success.

About SER
SER's World Conferences are the premier meeting point for professionals and students interested in ecological restoration and management. The 9th edition of the conference, due to the pandemic, was held virtually in Canada, where Mateo Cariño Fraisse also presented on ecosystem restoration.
This year, the conference will primarily focus on the often-overlooked connection between culture and nature, including the role of restoration in enhancing and rebuilding this connection. The conference theme encourages us to consider our own relationship with nature and the intertwining of human and ecological wellbeing.
