Programme for Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes (PEFC)
PEFC is a non-governmental organization established in order to support sustainable forest management. It functions as a global umbrella organisation for the assessment of and mutual recognition of national forest certification schemes. Thus, PEFC certification takes place according to the applicable PEFC-endorsed, national standards.
PEFC certification provides access to the market for PEFC certified wood products. In order to sell and label products as PEFC-certified, forest operations need a forest management certificate, while all other enterprises in the chain of processing and trade need a chain of custody certificate. In addition, certified organisations need to obtain a PEFC logo license.
In total, about 199 million hectares in 20 countries have been certified according to national PEFC standards or by a national system with which PEFC has established mutual recognition.
You can find out more about PEFC at www.pefc.org.
