Global Forest Registry

Is your wood purchase risky business? - check with the Global Forest Registry at www.globalforestregistry.org

The Global Forest Risk Registry is a free online tool providing information about the risk of sourcing controversial wood from more than 150 countries. The website is jointly developed by NEPCon, the Rainforest Alliance and FSC.

While the website has been developed mainly as a tool for FSC certified companies with an FSC-mixed production, the information provided is relevant for all stakeholders who condemn bad forestry and demand such tools in their own procurement policies.

The website applies the same definition of controversial sources as the FSC Controlled Wood standards. By checking your sources before you buy you can avoid wood from controversial sources, such as illegal logging or forestry that violates indigenous peoples’ rights.

This online tool is based on available publicly available information and is currently in a pilot phase. It is continually developed and improved.

Your comments appreciated

Stakeholder feedback is crucial in order to improve the information quality of the website and to include accurate information from all regions of the world. Fortunately, the initial level of response from the FSC community has been encouraging and we are looking forward to further inputs.

Sponsor the website

We are also looking for sponsors for developing the website into an even more powerful tool.

The second version of the Global Forest Registry is built on a technical platform enabling integration of different data formats and using a Google Earth Map like solution allowing detailed geographic information such as the exact borders of endangered High Conservation Value Forests, indigenous peoples' territories, plantations of GMOs etc.

We are now looking for further external funding in order to enable significant improvements of the design and user interface.

Your contribution, in whatever form, is greatly appreciated!
