Certified wood update

christmas greetings

Dear reader,

a few highlights from the closing year: The certified wood market continued to grow despite the global financial crisis. During the FSC General Assembly, consensus was reached on the way forward for FSC. Both EU and the US have taken significant steps to control the import of illegal timber, and the Global Risk Assessment website was launched, a buyer's tool that may help to bring illegal and destructive logging to an end. Finally, 2008 was the year when the world re-discovered the significance of forests in carbon sequestration. Thank you for your commitment to responsible forestry - we wish you all a merry Christmas and a prosperous new year!

Study: Biofuel crops replacing rainforest no good for the climate
A study recently published in the journal Conservation Biology shows that it is better for the climate to conserve tropical rainforests than replacing them with biofuel crops such as oil palms. According to lead author Finn Danielsen of NORDECO in Denmark, it would take at least 75 years to see any benefits for the climate from biofuel plantations on converted tropical forestlands. On peatlands, the time frame is as much as 600 years. Meanwhile, the rainforest destruction would lead to carbon release, and valuable biodiversity would be lost in the process Read more
