Conservation and sustainable use of peatlands in Slovakia
The project included scientific inventories of peatlands and identification of potential Natura 2000 sites throughout Slovakia. Furthermore, the project involved elaboration of management plans for six selected peatland areas.
The management planning process was stakeholder-based, and broad-based local management committees were set up. Furthermore, through public meetings and calls for written comments, relevant authorities, NGOs, and local citizens were involved in discussions and finalisation of draft management plans. The project also produced environmental educational materials focusing on peatlands.
The project was financed by the Danish Ministry of Environment. It was implemented by NEPCon in cooperation with the Slovakian NGO Daphne. Project implementation period: 2001-2003
